Gardening Soil

When choosing the proper type of gardening soil for a home project, it is essential that you understand and analyze your existing soil conditions. In Southern Ontario, sand and clay can make it difficult to achieve desired results.

Picking the Right Gardening Soil for the Job

In Southern Ontario locations such as Mississauga, Oakville, Milton and Burlington, a custom-blended soil or potting mix may be needed in order to create a lush, productive garden. After analyzing the sand and clay content in the ground, you can pick from the following types of planting and potting strategies:

  • Use a high-fibre, high quality compost if the sand and clay level is relatively low, and you're looking to revitalize existing soil.
  • Choose a premium topdressing that is a 50/50 mix of top soil and fibre in order to create a top layer that is more beneficial for seeding.
  • Pick a triple mix that combines soil, fibre and compost to fully break up and revitalize dirt that is heavy with sand and clay.
  • Consult with a local expert who can recommend and prepare custom planting and potting mixes according to your specific needs.
