Rich topsoil is as beneficial for new grass as it is for old. Few people realize they can significantly boost the health of their lawn by carefully adding new topsoil. If you simply pile the soil on, you can kill the grass. However, if you follow these instructions to add topsoil to your existing lawn it will be rich and lush-looking and your home will be the envy of the neighbourhood.
Why Add Topsoil to Your Lawn?
Topsoil can solve many problems that your lawn might be experiencing, including:
- Low areas and slope issues
- Lack of nutrients
- Compacted soil
- Bare spots
How to Spread Topsoil Over an Existing Lawn
Here’s how you can properly add topsoil to your existing lawn:
1. Aerate the Lawn
If your lawn’s soil is too compact, the new nutrients you’re adding won’t do too much good. You may need to aerate your lawn to get the benefits of the topsoil. If you do aerate, you’ll need more topsoil to take the place of the soil you’re removing.
2. Mix Your Topsoil
If you didn’t buy premixed topsoil, or if you’d like to add something else to it to better your soil, you need to mix it up to start. While some people add loam to their topsoil for a thicker texture, this is typically unnecessary in our area.
Thinly sprinkle the topsoil over the areas you’d like to treat. If there is an area where you want to build up the soil much higher than it is now, you’ll need to remove the sod first. Then lay down as much topsoil as you need. For the areas where you want to apply only thin soil, you should use a rake to disperse it evenly. If you leave any solid clumps, it could kill the grass beneath it. As you rake, you’ll find that you need to add more, to help fill the holes from aeration.
Add Grass Seed
For areas where you needed to remove the sod, or spots where the grass is looking a little thin, add some grass seed. Be sure that the seed is the same species of grass that you have on your lawn now and the right kind for your climate.
Water Your Lawn
Whether you’ve added grass seed or not, it’s wise to water the lawn to help the soil stay in place and help any grass seed sprout. To support the new grass, you will want to water more frequently for the next few weeks.
