What types of firewood do you have for sale?

Van Beek's has different varieties of high-quality wood for sale, each with its own advantages. For Hamilton area residents, we have the following wood for sale:

Birch firewood, gives off a little aroma and is ideal for starting a fire. Since it burns faster but gives off moderate heat, it should be used alongside slower-burning woods.

Hickory firewood is a great choice for its high heat output, minimal smoke, slow burning speed, and wonderful scent. It also imparts a great flavor to food.

Oak firewood, is very dense, providing high heat and slow burning speed, with longer-lasting fires and coal beds than some hardwoods.

Cherry firewood, supplies moderate heat and crackles beautifully. It has an excellent burning aroma and splits easily.

Mixed Blend is our best-selling option at Van Beek's. It includes maple, birch, beech, ash, and oak, giving you a great selection of fast-and slow-burning woods and different scents.

Hamilton area residents are encouraged to call or contact our team of wood experts if you have additional questions about the various wood types we carry.

How much firewood should I order from Van Beeks?

A 1,000-square-foot house will use approximately three cords of wood over the course of one winter. This number may vary depending on how often you use wood.

Hamilton area residents are encouraged to call or contact our team if you need help determining how much wood you need to order.

How Dry is your Firewood?

Van Beek's is a Hamilton retailer with a reputation for high-quality firewood and landscape supplies.

  • During the course of the season, we split random pieces of firewood from our stock and check the moisture content. Once the moisture is between 15 and 20% we know that it's ready to burn and is well seasoned.
  • One of the best ways to season firewood is by keeping it stockpiled in the fresh air and wind! This requires the wood to be outside and open to the elements.
  • If your wood is slightly wet from the rain, don't worry. The inside of the wood will still be dry. Follow our storage tips below and in a couple of days, the wood will be perfect to burn.
How Do I Store my Firewood?

Storing wood properly will help it last longer and give you more value for your money. Here are some tips for properly storing your firewood.

  • Store firewood in an outdoor shed or garage to keep it dry and protected from the elements.
  • Wood is best stored outside. Covering your outdoor firewood stacks with a tarp will help keep them dry and prevent them from rotting.
  • Wood should always be stored off the ground to allow for proper ventilation. A great options is to store your wood on a wooden pallet.
  • If your logs are already dry, it's perfectly fine to store them inside your garage. If they're not dry, regrettably, there won't be enough fresh or flowing air to help dry them out in your garage environment.
  • Organize your firewood so there is some space on all sides of the stack. This allows air to circulate and prevents moisture build-up, which can cause the wood to rot.
  • Keep your firewood off the ground to reduce rot and infestation from ants, termites, spiders, other insects and bacteria. Store firewood on a meta rack or on surfaces like concrete.
  • Leave some logs in the firewood rack by the fireplace to start the next fire. This will help the next fire start more quickly.
  • Avoid storing firewood against your house - or even too close to your house. Firewood is easy to ignite, so be careful with any sparks near it. This includes fire pits, barbecue grills, chimeneas, and patio fireplaces.

Should you have any additional questions about storing your firewood, please email our team at oakville@vanbeeks.com for more information.

Compared to other forms of heating, why should I heat with firewood?

Heating with wood is friendly to the environment and cheaper than other heating methods.

HamiltonDry Firewood Chart Why Heat with Firewood from Van Beeks

Renewable Energy

Renewable means that you simply don't run out or come to an end. Wood-bumning stoves offer a low-carbon alternative to heating your property using fossil fuels. Trees naturally absorb carbon as they grow, which is then returned to the atmosphere when the wood is burned. If you source your wood locally, a fireplace or wood stove is practically carbon neutral.

No global warming

Wood-burning just warms you, not the globe. As fossil fuels (such as oil and natural gas) burn they release carbon dioxide - the greenhouse gas responsible for global warming. When wood burns the carbon dioxide released is absorbed and recycled by the trees.

Cheapest

Wood burning lowers your utility costs. Wood is the most affordable fuel for domestic heating as per data from both the Research Institute of Sustainable Energy and efficiency Nova Scotia.

Warms you like no other

The radiant heat and soft glow from a stove or fireplace are like the rays of the sun and warm you like no other heat source. Find solace there in the wood flames; it is one of life's small pleasures.

From bagged, 1/2 cord, face cord to a full bush cord of firewood, Van Beek's has your covered! for all your firewood needs. Our quick delivery service is available to ship firewood in the following area:
