How do I clean Permacon pavers?

Cleaning Permacon pavers is a straightforward process, and here are some general steps to guide you:

Remove Debris: Start by sweeping off any loose debris from the surface of the pavers with a broom. This first step is crucial as it prevents scratches or marks caused by larger particles during the subsequent washing process.

Rinse: Using a garden hose, rinse the pavers to remove dust and loose particles further. This initial rinse cleans the surface and prepares it for deeper cleaning if needed.

Apply Cleaner: If your pavers are stained or heavily soiled, you may use a specialized paver cleaner. Be sure to choose a non-acidic cleaner to avoid damaging the pavers. Apply the cleaner per the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring even coverage for optimal cleaning results.

Scrub: For stubborn stains, use a long-handled scrub brush to gently clean the pavers’ surface. It's important to avoid using metal brushes as they can scratch the pavers. A thorough scrub can help dislodge deeper dirt and bring back the paver's original look.

Rinse Again: Once you've scrubbed the pavers, rinse thoroughly with water to remove the cleaner. This step helps to prevent residue build-up and leaves your pavers looking fresh and clean.

Dry: After rinsing, allow the pavers to air dry. Natural drying helps to prevent watermarks and keeps your pavers looking their best.

Remember, it's always best to first test any cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn't discolour or damage the pavers. It might be necessary to call in a professional cleaning service for specific or persistent stains.

At Van Beeks, we're always ready to provide additional advice and guidance on maintaining your Permacon pavers. Don't hesitate to contact us if you need more information. Our goal is to help you keep your outdoor spaces beautiful and well-maintained.

What are Permacon products made of?

Permacon stones are made of concrete, which is a durable and versatile material. These concrete stones are designed to mimic the appearance of natural stone, brick, or other materials. They're carefully crafted through a manufacturing process that involves blending cement, aggregate (sand, gravel, or crushed stone), and water.

One notable characteristic of Permacon stones is that they're made with integral colour, mixed into the concrete before it's shaped and hardened. This ensures that the colour is on the surface and runs throughout the entire stone. Manufacturing this way ensures colour remains consistent even if the stone’s surface is chipped or worn.

Permacon also uses a variety of textures and finishes on their stones, which adds to the aesthetic appeal and makes each stone unique. The range of colours, shapes, and sizes allows for a high degree of customization in landscape design.

Remember that the quality and longevity of any installation depend significantly on the correct preparation of the base and proper installation of the stones.

At Van Beeks, we can provide the guidance and support you need for successful Permacon stone projects. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

How do I install Permacon pavers (and slabs)?

Installing Permacon pavers and slabs can be done in several stages. Here's a simplified guide to help you understand the process:

Design Your Layout: Before you start, sketch a design of your planned layout. This will give you an idea of how many pavers or slabs you'll need and help you plan your space.

Prepare the Site: Next, you need to prepare the site. This includes marking out the area where you want to install the pavers or slabs and then excavating it to the necessary depth, usually around 7 to 10 inches deep for pavers and slightly less for slabs, depending on their intended use and the local soil conditions.

Install the Base: Lay a gravel base, often made from crushed stone, and compact it with a plate compactor. The base provides a stable foundation for your pavers or slabs.

Add Sand Layer: On top of the gravel base, add a layer of coarse sand. This helps to level the base and provides a cushion for the pavers or slabs. Place the Pavers or Slabs: Start placing your pavers or slabs according to your design. Use a rubber mallet to tap them into place lightly.

Install Edge Restraints: Once all the pavers or slabs are installed, put in edge restraints to prevent them from shifting. This can be made from metal, plastic, or pre-cast concrete. Sweep in Joint Sand: Sweep polymeric sand into the joints between the pavers or slabs. This sand hardens when wet and helps to lock the pavers or slabs in place.

Compact and Seal: Compact the surface using a plate compactor with a protective pad to avoid damaging the pavers or slabs. After compacting, apply a sealant to protect the surface from stains and weathering.

Remember, installing pavers or slabs can be a labour-intensive process, and getting the preparation stages right is crucial to ensure a long-lasting, stable surface. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the best results. If this is too large of a project for you, we would strongly consider hiring a professional for large projects or if you need clarification on any stage of the process.

At Van Beeks, we're here to offer advice and support for your Permacon projects, so don't hesitate to reach out if you need help.

How do I get rid of scratches on Permacon stones?

Repairing scratches on Permacon stones can be done through the following steps:

Identify the Scratch: The first step is to identify the scratch and assess its depth. This will help determine the most effective method to repair it. Light scratches often disappear with cleaning and routine maintenance, while deeper scratches may require more attention.

Clean the Stone: Use a soft brush and warm water mixed with a gentle, pH-neutral soap to clean the area around the scratch. This will help to remove any dirt or particles that could interfere with the repair process. Rinse thoroughly and allow the stone to dry.

Apply Stone Enhancer: Consider using a stone colour enhancer for lighter scratches. This product can help to camouflage the scratch by deepening the colour of the stone around it, making it less noticeable.

Stone Filler or Repair Kit: For deeper scratches, you might need to use a stone filler or a stone repair kit, available at many home improvement stores. Ensure that the colour of the filler matches your stone. Apply according to the product's instructions and allow it to dry.

Sand the Area: Once the filler has dried, gently sand the area using fine-grit sandpaper to blend the repair with the surrounding stone.

Seal the Stone: Finally, seal the stone to protect the repaired area and the rest of the surface from future damage.

It's important to note that Permacon stones are manufactured with colour throughout, so scratches or surface wear will show the same colour as the rest of the stone. Hire a professional if you're uncomfortable performing these steps or dealing with extensive scratches.
